The sons of Aaron…offered strange fire before the LORD…and fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them. — Leviticus 10:1–2
I was greatly troubled to hear that an evangelical leader was recently offering a conference that condemned fellow brothers and sisters in Christ who had different experiences of worship than he did. He even went so far as to say they were as lost as cult members. I have certainly witnessed things in the Body of Christ that are flaky and unscriptural on the charismatic side, but some mainline and evangelical groups are just as flaky in their editing of Scripture to please their own comfort level and need for control.
Scripture demonstrates that God was and is perfectly able to recognize and deal with improper worship without our highly subjective and frail judgments. He doesn’t need our help. The last time I checked, the Holy Spirit was still convicting people of sin and guiding them into all truth.
Ever since the Garden of Eden, man has chosen to live under the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. The ramifications are that we obtain forbidden knowledge that puffs us up with pride and makes us the judge of what is right and wrong. Division and fruitless arguments are just around the corner.
The Tree of Life is Jesus. Christianity is not as much about theological correctness as it is relationship with the perfect Father of Creation. Jesus said we must be like children to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. We should enjoy and display child-like innocence, trust, and dependency. We are aware that good and evil, right and wrong lurks about us, but we hide under the wings of our Father, realizing he is all-knowing, so we don’t have to be. He will protect us and meet our every need. This is the perfect rest he offers us.
Your heavenly Daddy’s got it! Trust him. Lean on him. He will protect you and lead you in the “right” way.
